Beijing 2008 in Wisconsin
It’s just a normal day for my colleagues. The biggest thing in the news is Brett Favre’s trade to the NY Jets. But today is 8-8-08! The Beijing Olympics opening ceremony is taking place right now! They couldn’t care less. For me, it’s a series of sighs. Five years in China. Five years listening to the hopes and dreams of the Chinese people. All focused to one single place and time: Beijing 2008 – 8-8-08. And now it’s here, and it’s there, and I’m here, and the people around me don’t care.

I spent the evening in a bar in Seoul, watching the opening ceremony. Even here people didn’t really seem to care much. I’ve been writing some slightly negative things about the run up to the Games, but I have every hope that it’s going to be a positive time for China, with inevitable ups and downs along the way – sounds a bit too much like propaganda perhaps, but sometimes the best of us become brainwashed

Ni hao! I care. I even watched most of the opening ceremony.

Two years in China, back home in NJ, feeling a lot of what you’re feeling. My friends and family are interested in the Olympics as far as their favorite athletes or sports, and feeling connected because “Meg used to live in Beijing”. Nothing like the excitement in China!

Wow! WOW!! WOW!!! That’s all I was thinking! Waiting a 100 years for this day! That’s what I was thinking! There will probably never be a better opening ceremony! That’s what I was thinking! Wow! Wow! Wow!
I was on the road coming back from FL, but I watched it on DVR the next morning. I was amazed. You can tell that a lot of work and effort was put into the production of such a great show.
Sorry it’s been so long. I’ve been meaning to call. I hope all is well in Wisconsin.
