To Upgrade to Leopard or Not?

Why I’m considering upgrading to Leopard

Mostly it’s the little things that have always bugged me about Tiger:

- It doesn’t lock up the system when searching for network shares.

- Double-clicking events in iCal opens them for editing.

- When renaming a document the file type extension is not automatically highlighted.

- The Finder displays the full path to a file.

- Spotlight has boolean operators.

But there are bigger things too:

- More robust PDF editing features in Preview.

- Time Machine.

- Quick Look.

- There will be Leopard-only apps in the next few months I am sure to want.

- I can get it for $69 with an education discount. That’s a pretty good deal for features like Time Machine and a robust PDF editor.

What’s holding me back

- Money. $69 is still $69 more than $0 and I need to be very careful with my money, having only started working in the US a little more than a month ago.

- Apple’s AnythingNew.0 releases are buggy. I may upgrade after 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 is released.

- Some apps I use are sure to need to be updated to work properly with Leopard and will not yet have been updated.

- Although some reports indicate that Leopard’s performance on systems similar to mine, a 1.07GHz iBook with 1.25GB RAM, is the same to Tiger’s performance, I’d still like to read more reports concerning performance on this kind of system.

I’m going to wait on Leopard. Sweet as it looks, there are bound to be bugs, and I’ve abused my poor (Intel) MacBook enough without throwing a new OS at it just yet. Need to get lots of little issues sorted out before I think about upgrading.

Check out the introduction movie, which now plays full-screen during the first boot into Leopard.

Perhaps it’s not worth it on my iBook G4.

(As I sit here writing to you on my new iMac)

If you happen to have any spare hardware around and wouldn’t mind testing out ubuntu 7.10, I would tell you to check it out. I installed in on an old Dell Pentium 3 a few nights ago and the OS is just brilliantly composed. I plugged my printer to the laptop and after automatic detection all drivers were installed without human touch. That’s true plug and play. I can send you a cd that you can run live on your desktop using only your CD-ROM and RAM or you can install it.

    You bought an iMac?

I’ve had the 7.10 Live CD for awhile and want to put it on my PIII Thinkpad. The problem is I need to partition the drive to do it, but I need to backup the drive first, as I use XP for a few things. I don’t trust the live partitioner.

    Kevin,

Let’s not worry about partitions. Let’s create a virtual PC to backup to our external harddrive. That’s my project for the weekend. XEN or VMWARE…. I’ll let you know what happens. Also, you might find this interesting: http://www.codeweavers.com/

  8. Armand Says:

Codeweavers weren’t perfect, but for the applications I needed it worked. I’m going to VMware worked, but my laptop doesn’t have enough RAM to sustain the virtual PC. It runs, but it’s very slow. What do you need XP for by the way? XP sucks. I really would like to know.

Sometimes IE is the only browser that will work properly with a site. I also use the Windows version of Microsoft Office to get clip art from Microsoft’s website, as that is the only way to get at their large collection of clip art, and I use VB 2005 Express for homework projects.

Did you ever decide to get Leopard?

I figured it wasn’t worth the upgrade on my aging G4. I’d love to get a new iMac with Leopard on it though.
