See OS X Menu Extras Quickly
A typical problem I run into daily on my Mac is that the display on my iBook is smaller than there are items on the menu bar. That means that menu extras, the little icons on the right of the menu bar, get “eaten” by application menus, the text-based menus on the left.
One way to get around this problem is to switch briefly to the Finder, but as you can see, even though the Finder only has six menus there is no space for any more menu extras.
A better way to get around this problem would be to create an application that basically does nothing and has no menus. Fortunately, that application already exists, NoMenuBar.
The real key to making NoMenuBar useful and not annoy you by taking up precious dock space is to use it along with a Quicksilver trigger, which you can use to create a keyboard shortcut to open NoMenuBar when you want to use it.
