Porting Comments from Haloscan
I’m working on porting the comments from the old host for the Weifang Radish, http://homepage.mac.com/kevinjamessmith/iblog, which will cease to exist in ten days (since I’m not renewing my .Mac account, to me it’s not worth it).
When I first moved to WordPress.com I thought I wouldn’t port the comments over, because it seemed like too much trouble. However, after a lot of thought I realized that the comments are a very important part of this blog, and I really don’t want to lose them.
The comments currently live at Haloscan.com. Unfortunately, I don’t have a premium account with them, and so the export feature is not available to me. That means I am moving them manually! I’ve got the groundwork done now and am starting to post them onto wordpress.com, one-by-one. Let’s just say it’s going to take some time.
I don’t think, however, I’ll be able to save the formatting–even the paragraphs–of the Haloscan comments because otherwise it would just be an unbearable amount of work. It’s enough work as it is already, believe me.
This is one of those times when I wish I was a magician with scripting, because it’s very repetitive work and I’m sure a script could be written to do the bulk of it. However, having had a little experience writing scripts and even doing some C++ programming I know that it would definitely take me much longer to write out a good script than it would for me to just do it manually. I’d learn a lot along the way, but I’m just not in the mood at the moment to spend hours and hours working on a script.
